Thread Snips
Compact, responsive and beautifully hand-forged snips are designed for precise thread trimming and other intricate cutting tasks. Their distinctive claw-shaped blades sit close to the thumb and index finger, allowing even light pressure to transfer efficiently to the cutting edge. This provides excellent control with minimal effort.
The short blades are easy to manoeuvre in confined areas, making the snips particularly useful wherever accuracy matters. Carefully balanced spring tension delivers a smooth, comfortable action, while meticulous traditional forging creates a durable tool intended to provide a lifetime of service with proper care.
Key features
Compact claw-style blades for fine, accurate cutting
Short distance between the fingers and cutting edge for efficient force transfer
Excellent manoeuvrability during thread trimming and delicate work
Responsive spring tension for smooth, comfortable operation
Traditionally fire-forged by skilled craftspeople
Built for exceptional durability and long-term use
Traditional So-Hizukuri Craftsmanship
These snips are made using Terasaki Hamono’s traditional so-hizukuri, or fully fire-forged, method. Rather than starting with pre-manufactured composite steel or forming the tool in a mould, the craftsperson heats separate pieces of iron and steel in a flame reaching approximately 1,000°C.
The heated materials are then hammer-forged together, bonding the hard cutting steel to the iron body while simultaneously shaping the tool and controlling its thickness. Although demanding and prone to a high failure rate, this process allows exceptionally fine adjustment of the blade form, spring tension and feel in the hand. The result is a responsive, characterful cutting tool made for lasting performance.
Specifications
Style: Tsume (claw-style)
Manufacturing method: Fully fire-forged (so-hizukuri)
Recommended use: Thread trimming and detailed cutting
Total length: 100mm
Blade length: 37mm
